Learn to cook lamb from the best! Chefs from renowned regional restaurants, and lamb growers share their secrets and recipes with you in these free demonstrations which will run all day. Come in for a little rest in cooler comfort, enjoy music between classes and learn all about cooking lamb. FREE.

BUSINESS PLANNING

This class provides a proven step-by-step strategy for marketing your products from your animals. How can I decide what my raw fiber should become? How should it be processed? What will sell? How do I approach local shops about carrying my products? What prices should I charge? What about co-ops or consignments? How important is an inventory list? This information will help you get the greatest dollar return out of your fiber!

DYEING CLASSES

DYEING PROTIEN FIBERS WITH NATURAL DYES with Linda Hartshorn
Saturday, July 28, 2007 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Classroom #2 (Kitchen)
Class size limited to 10 students. Registration fee: $35.

In this hands-on class we will dye wool yarns three different colors: magenta-red with cochineal, orange with madder root and yellow with onion skins. We will first prepare a mordant bath with alum. After mordanting we will prepare the various dyebaths and dye the yarns. Participants will take home the skeins of yarn to use in knitting or weaving projects.

Participants may want to bring an apron or wear old clothes. Instructor will provide yarn, gloves, and dyes.

EXPLORING INDIGO: with Linda Hartshorn,
Saturday, July 28, 2007 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. Classroom #2 (Kitchen)
Class size limited to 10 students. Registration fee: $35.

The secrets of the blue dye plant indigofera tinctoria are explored in this hands-on class. Indigo dyeing is done by a unique process, different from the other natural dyes. Prepare the indigo vat and and dye skeins of yarn and fabrics. As the fibers emerge from the vat, watch the color turn from green to blue right before your eyes! Participants will take home skeins of yarn and a scarf.

Participants may want to bring an apron or wear old clothes. Instructor will provide yarn, fabrics, gloves, and dyes.

FELTING

THE FABULOUS FELTED PURSE with Colleen Simon of Fiber Confections
Saturday, July 28 - 3:00 p.m. - 5 p.m. - CLASSROOM #3. Registration fee: $25

Learn all the basics of knitting and felting a purse including using novelty yarns. You will learn about a variety of embellishments including needle felting, and you will knit a sample that you can felt at home. The fee includes detailed instructions and a variety of yarns for your sample. You will to need to bring size 11 or 13 needles.

NEEDLE FELTING with Shane Faerber of Sheep City, USA
Saturday, July 28 - 4:00 p.m. - 5 p.m. 1 HOUR - CLASSROOM 4. Class is limited to 25 participants. Class fee: $70

This class is all about the clover needle felting tool and mat. This great class show how to quick and fun needle felting can be. How projects can be done in a short amount of time, and get great results, with very little hand fatigue. Registration fee includes felting tool, mat, wool base, and roving and yarn for embellishments.

FIBER PREPARATION CLASSES

DRUM CARDER COLOR AND FIBER BLENDING with Janet Heppler of Nebo-Rock Textiles
Saturday, July 28, 2007, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.CLASSROOM #1.
Class size limited to 15. Registration fee: $45.

In this class you will learn how to use a drum carder. We will start with primary colors, plus white and gray, and make various color blends. This is a good time to experiment. We will also mix different fibers (wool, mohair, silk, and angora) into spinning batts. Each participant will receive a batt.

PREPARING YOUR FLEECE FOR SHOW with Janet Heppler, of Nebo-Rock Textiles
This workshop requires advanced registration. Registration begins on April 2, 2007.
Class limited to 20 participants. Registration fee: $35
Saturday, July 28, 2007, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. CLASSROOM: #1

In this class you will learn how to feed your sheep for strong wool, how to choose an award-winning fleece, and how to skirt your fleece and prepare it for show. You will learn what a judge is looking for when checking each fleece. Learn which class a fleece should be based on its spinning and micron count and a little about how the breed determines the wool’s best use. Handouts provided.

Saturday, July 28,2007, Time 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. CLASSROOM #5

Learn which types of wool and other fibers work best for various products ie:yarn, sliver,roving or batting. Samples of products from various fibers and blends will be provided with an explanation of why they worked or not for the desired end product. Participants should bring samples of their wool for evaluation. Also learn about preparing fleeces for mill processing to achieve a more desirable, marketable and cost effective result. A brief history of the mill and the various breeds of sheep will be given. Get ideas on what products, yarn sizes, blends etc are available at Yolo Wool Mill as well as other mills from your fiber.

KNITTING CLASSES

INTRODUCTION TO KNITTED LACE with Maria Inglesby, of FIBER ELEMENTS
Saturday, July 28, 2007 9 a.m. - 12 noon - THREE HOURSDixon's Senior Center CLASSROOM #4.
Advanced registration required. Class size limited to 10 students. Class Fee: $55 -

This class will introduce you to the rudimentary skills necessary to explore the world of lace knitting. We will discuss and learn various cast-on techniques for shawls, stoles, and lace scarves, be introduced to basic chart reading and acquire the skills to shape the lace garment with increases and decreases commonly encountered in lace knitting. Not to worry, we will not begin working with “thread!” We will be using linen or worsted spun wool of sport weight. You may choose to work on linen facial wash cloths (warning: these are addictive!) – or you may work squares with exquisite heathered wool (which, combined in a patchwork fashion, create lovely sampler scarves or throws). Please bring all knitting accessories, a notebook and pen, as well as needles size US 4 (3.5mm) and US 6 or 7 (4.0 or 4.5mm). Class is limited to 25 participants. Registration fee: $40

The perfect way to use up all of your leftover balls of yarn and make something incredible! Use different colors, textures, shapes, positive and negative spaces to achieve a beautiful and unique garment, scarf, bag, you name it. If you can think of it-you can make it. This technique is valuable for all knitters, whether beginners, intermediates, or advanced. Anyone who knows how to cast on and bind off can do this technique.

In this class you will learn about the different breeds of Angora Rabbits and their general care and nutrition. You will learn how to pluck and clip an Angora Rabbit and about the uses for rabbit fur. There will be a demo of spinning rabbit fur. Handouts and fiber will be provided.

SPINNING CLASSES

THE MAGIC OF SILK: the lives of silkworms and spinning their magic fiber with Karen Emrey
of The Royale Hare
Saturday, July 28, 2007 - 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Classroom #3
Class fee: $35 Class size limited to 10 students.

We will observe and learn about the different varieties of silkworms and their fibers from around the world. The handling and spinning of different varieties, blends and their preparations will be discussed and spun. We will concentrate on less talking and more spinning.

Spinners should be at least advanced beginners.

BEGINNING TOP WHORL SPINDLING with Renee Tully of Ren-Con Ranch
Saturday, July 28, 2007 - 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Classroom #3. Class size limited to 10 students. Registrtion fee: $35.

Learn to spin on a drop spindle an ancient art going back to ancient Egypt. A two (2) hour class where you will learn the basics of drafting and spinning wool. You will learn how to attach the fiber to the spindle, how to select your fiber and the different type of spindles. By the end of the class, you can expect to be able to draft and spin your first yarn!

Spindle and fiber will be provided by instructor. (students may use their own spindle if approved by instructor)

INTERMEDIATE DROP SPINDLING with Brooke Sinnes of Sincere Sheep
Saturday, July 28 - 3:00-5:00 P.M. CLASSROOM #5
Class size limited to 6 students. Class and Materials fee: $22.

Are you interested in taking your spindling techniques to the next level? This class is for you. We will practice different methods of drafting and plying with our drop spindles such as spinning from the fold, Andean plying, 2 and 3 plied yarns, and chained singles (Navajo plying).

Please bring a drop spindle and a small amount of handspun singles wound into 3 balls to the class.

LONG DRAW SPINNING with Jean Franklin of Spin Web Designs

This workshop requires a fee and advanced registration. Class size limited to 10 students. Class and Materials fee: $35.

Do you have sliver or roving piling up? Would you like to turn that into wonderful warm woolen yarn ? Have you heard the phrase "LONG DRAW " and wondered how its done? well this class is for you. ----Bring your well oiled wheel with gentle tension and prepare yourself for a new technique. Instructor may have wheels to borrow if you do not have one, but they are available first come, first served.

WEAVING CLASSES/WORKSHOP

DOUBLE YOUR WEAVING PLEASURE BY WARPING IN HALF THE TIME with Robin Lynde, of MERIDIAN JACOBS
Saturday, July 28, 2007, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. - Dixon's Senior Center CLASSROOM #1. This workshop requires a fee and advanced registration. Class size limited to 8 students. Registration Fee: $45

A successful weaving project depends on good warping technique. Winding warp doesn’t have to be an arduous task—in fact it can be a creative part of the weaving process. Using two threads at a time will half the time it takes to create a warp. Learn Robin’s techniques for winding a warp and dressing the loom. Students will design and wind their own scarf warps in class. Robin will demonstrate dressing the loom (back-to-front) and discuss techniques of efficient weaving. Class fee includes yarn for scarf project and handouts.
