Janet Finch has always loved to do handwork. Knitting, sewing, spinning, weaving, hand papermaking, and watercolor
painting are some of the arts and crafts she has enjoyed.
As a handspinner, she enjoyed working from raw fleeces. She would go to fairs to purchase prime fleeces of many breeds.
It is exciting to work with big machines in the Mill to prepare whole fleeces quickly! She knows that fiber prep
isn't everyone's favorite fiber work and, of course, that's where she comes in!
The Fiber Mill is on the farm right next to her house. Friends, neighbors, and family helped Larry Ogden, her husband,
to construct the building which houses the Mill. It was quite the project! Features of the building include cement
floor with radiant hot water heat built right in, extra thick cement under the carding machine for earthquake compliance,
and a boiler that will deliver very hot water to the scouring sinks.
The carder is a large cottage industry model. It's dimensions are 6' tall, 6' long and 4'wide. It features variable
speed to enable it to handle a wide variety of fiber types, from very fine alpaca and merino wool, to courser, longer
fibers such as mohair or Lincoln wool.
The mill can provide the following services: Scouring, Picking, Carding and Custom Blending.
