National Spinning Competition

DIVISION 006-030 NATIONAL SPINNING COMPETITION In each task, points are awarded based 70% on length of yarn and 20% on quality and 10% on creativity, costume, artestry or attitude. Contestants may enter one, some or all classes. Awards and points will be given for each class. The Spinner accumulating the most points overall will be named National Spinning Compeition Winner. In order to be named Best Spinner in America, it will be necessary to participate in most or all of the events in order to accumulate enough points. Classes contributing to the National Spinning Competition include Longest Thread, Strategic Spinning, Creative Spinning and Spinner's Triathelon. Class: 72. Warm up Spin: 1:30 pm No Charge Class to be announced on the day of the event. The purpose is to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere for the day’s events 73. Longest Thread 2:00 pm Contestants will be given 10 gm carded wool and spin for up to 20 minutes. Yarn will be judged for length and quality, as well as amount of fiber used.
A. Wheel spinner 74. Strategic Spinning 2:45 pm Spinners will need to determine the best weight to spin a given fiber, spin all the fiber within 30 minutes and produce the maximum yardage. Each contestant must supply a spinning wheel or spindle. Spinners are given one ounce of mystery fiber and must spin ALL fibers within 30 minutes. Contestants not finished within the allotted time will lose points based on the weight remaining unspun. Winner is determined by the maximum yardage from a given fiber.
A. Wheel spinner 75. Creative Spinning 3:30 pm Each contestant will be given, at random, 3 small bags with varied fibers/color. Contestants shall have 30 minutes to design and spin a designer yarn. Hand cards, wool combs and flickers may all be used for preparation. Contestants will be asked to write a description of their yarn and suggest how it might be used. Entries will be judged by the quality of yarn spun, amount of fiber used, design interest and written description.
A. Wheel spinner 76. Spinner’s Triathelon 4:15 pm This is a three part competition:
Task #1 - Spin for 2 minutes
Task #2 - Spin for 2 minutes wearing rubber gloves (provided) In each task, points are awarded based 80% on length of yarn and 20% on quality:
A. 1st place = 25 points Contestantsmust supply a spinning wheel or spindle. Contestants must complete all three tasks. After completing all three tasks, the contestants will be ranked according to their total accumulated points 77. Team spinning 4:45 pm In this competition, the goal is to be the first one over the finish line! Each team just supply a spinning wheel. One person treadles and another person stands and drafts, pulling backward (the yarn does not wind on). The team whose drafter crosses the 50 yard finish line first is the winner.
78. Junior spinning Competition 2:00 pm This contest is for all juniors who have attempted spinning and are 16 years or younger. There is no entry fee or pre-registration required. Each contestant must bring their own wheel and chair or drop spindle. Carded wool will be provided. The contest will last 15 minutes, after which the singles yarn will be skeined, measured and judged. A prize ribbon will be awarded for each contestant.
A. Wheel spinner Prizes will be awarded for each of the following classes:
1. Most even yarn Awards: Ribbons through 3rd place in each class. Lambtown T-shirts to 1st place contestants in each class. Registration will be in advance at the Fiber Arts office, through the mail, or up to 15 minutes before the event begins at the judging site in the Fiber Arts building. Participants are to provide their own wheel or drop spindle, and a niddy-noddy. The classes will be divided into Youth and Beginner. The beginner class is for frank beginners, and is for the fun and enjoyment of learning on the spot. Youth classes are for age 16 and under. Remember to visit the wool show located in the Fiber Arts Building (the old Firehouse). Some of the best fleeces from around the west are available for purchase. Fleeces may be reserved from the time the Festival opens at 10:00 a.m. until the Fiber Fair closes at 8:00 p.m., however they can not be removed from the premises until after the Wool Show and release by Lambtown Staff and the Producer.

Please note that no refunds will be given due to inclement weather. Please make all checks payable to: Lambtown USA Festival Upon acceptance of your application, you will receive an official notification, with directions and the time you will need to arrive. To enter, applications must be in by no later than July 20, 2006.
